THE LOCATIONS
Killough
(Irish: Cill Locha)
Nestled on the beautiful south coast of County Down, the sleepy village of Killough sits across Dundrum bay from the Mountains of Mourne. The harbour was once a bustling hive of activity with a thriving export and fishing industry, but is now a quiet haven for a few local boats.
Its pretty sycamore lined main street, green spaces and coastal paths make it a pleasant place.
It also has the distinction of being the birth and burial place of Charles Sheils, as well as being the location of the first Almshouses he constructed.
Sheils Killough
Built in 1868, the Sheils buildings in Killough were the first of Charles Sheils' institutions.
16 recently renovated houses are occupied, plus the Superintendent’s residence. Major renovations are in progress on the remainder of the site. When completed there will be 25 houses in total plus the Superintendent’s residence plus a Common Room.
